Many Koreans are afraid of going to America because of the gun violence, what do you think of this.
많은 한국인들이 총기사건 때문에 미국에 가는 것에 겁을 먹는데, 이에 대해 어떻게 생각하시나요?

Did you know that American English is LOADED with expressions about guns! I read somewher that americans make up 5% of the world population and have 50% of the guns!
본론으로 들어가기 전에, 영어에 총이랑 관련된 재밌는 단어들이 많다는 걸 참고로 말해주고 싶어요.
전 세계에서 미국인 비율은 5% 밖에 안 되는데 미국인의 총기 소지율은 50% 나 된다고 해요.

와 놀랍네요! 근데 실제로 많은 미국인들이 총을 보유하고 있나요?

Guns are a really complicated topic. Each state has different laws. Some Americans have guns and some don’t. The people who have guns have many.
총은 각 주 마다 법이 다르기 때문에 딱 정의하기가 굉장히 복잡한 주제에요.
누구는 총을 가지고 있지만 누구는 없죠. 근데 일단 총이 있는 사람은 많이 보유하고 있어요.

Why is this???
그래요? 왜죠?

Many Americans don’t trust the government and they think if the wrong people get into power, like a Hitler or dictator, they should have the right to defend themselves
많은 미국인들이 정부를 믿지 않는데 행여나 히틀러나 독재자 같은 인물이 정치에 관여하게 될 경우, 시민들이 자신의 권리를 보호하기 위해서죠.

Can’t the government take the guns away?
정부가 총을 빼앗아갈 수도 있지 않나요?

Good luck with that… even if they could take away all registered guns, many people who own guns have guns that are not registered, incase something like this happens.
총을 보유한 사람들은 정부가 개인적으로 허가 된 총을 빼앗아 갈 경우를 대비해서, 허가되지 않은 총을 가지고 있기도 해요.

So what should Koreans do to avoid people with guns?
총을 소유한 사람들과 부딪히지 않기 위해서 어떻게 해야 할까요?

Well you will notice that in a place where guns are prevalent, people are more polite and not rude to each other. If you accidently bump into someone, you are very appolagetic. You say, oh I am sorry, my mistake.
사실 총 소지가 일반적인 곳에서의 사람들이 더 예의바르고 덜 무례해요.
누군가랑 부딪히게 되면 아주 예의바르게 사과하는 편이죠.

I was once in the car in Phoenix, and my stupid friend was driving crazy and honked at this car that was going slow.. being rude you know. When we got to the traffic light a gun was pointed at me and my friend.
한 번은 피닉스에서 제 친구가 운전을 거칠게 하다가 천천히 가는 차에 경적을 울렸어요.
그러고 신호에 걸렸는데 제 친구가 경적 울린 차의 주인이 저희한테 총을 겨누더라고요.
저희가 실례를 한거죠.

와 진짜로 총을 쏘았을 수도 있었잖아요!?

It was just a warning. In the countryside and in smaller cities in AMerica, people are more relaxed and slow paced, honking at them and being rude disturbs there peace.
일단 경고였죠. 미국 내 작은 도시나 시골 쪽은 사람들이 좀 더 여유로워요.
그래서 저희가 경적을 울린게 무례한 거였고 그 사람들만의 평화로움을 깬거라고 볼 수 있죠.

한국처럼 빨리 빨리 스타일이 아니네요.

Right. You be polite and careful and most likely you won’t have a problem.
아니죠. 조금만 주의하면 무사할 거에요

What about in big cities?
큰 도시에서는 어떤가요?

In big cities the gun laws are usually much more strict and if you avoid certain areas of the city and you should be okay.
큰 도시에서는 총에 관한 법이 더 엄격해요. 근데 무엇보다 도시 내에서 위험한 특정 장소들을 피하는게 제일 중요하죠.
