One of my mentors a Korean professor once told me a great analogy
he said “’if there was a fire, a Korean woman would use her hands to cover her face, An American women would use her hands to cover her body.” This analogy is a great way to explain the beauty differences.
어느 한국 교수님이 저한테 “만약 불이 나면 한국 여성들은 손으로 얼굴을 가리고 미국 여성들은 몸을 가릴 것이다.” 라고 하시더군요. 저는 이 문장이 한국과 미국의 미의 차이를 설명하는데 좋은 예시라 생각해요.

그러네요. 성형수술에 대해서는 어떻게 생각하나요?

Many American women get breast surgery, liposuction and tummy tucks. Rarely do American women change there facial structure or have eye surgery.
미국 여성들은 얼굴 성형보다 가슴이나 지방흡입 수술을 많이 하는 편이에요.

Oh really. you said in your book, American women want to stand out, what does that mean? 그렇군요. 본인 책에 미국 여성들이 튀어 보이고 싶어 한다고 했는데 무슨 말인가요?

American women want to look beautiful and unique from other women. Also the highest form of beauty in the west is natural beauty.
미국 여성들은 예쁘고 유니크 해보이고 싶어 하고 미국에서 가장 큰 아름다움은
바로 ‘Natural Beauty'(자연미) 에요.

Natural beauty, you mean no surgery?
‘Natural Beauty’ 라면 수술을 하지 않은 자연미 말이죠?

Yes so if an American women had plastic surgery, she wouldn’t talk about it.
네. 그래서 수술을 했더라도 말하지 않을 거 에요.

Korean women seem to talk about it like they found some new store they found in the mall. American women are more secretive about there new changes.
한국 여성들은 “어디에 새로운 성형외과가 생겼다, 어디가 잘 한다.” 라고 서로 공유하는 편 인것 같은데 미국인들은 좀 더 비밀스러워요.

You wrote “many ways to get the male gaze” what do you mean by this?
책에 “Many ways to get the male gaze” (남자들의 시선을 사로잡는 방법들) 라는 표현이 무슨 의미죠?

Well America is society of people who are from so many different ethnic backgrounds and mixed parents. 미국은 엄청 다양한 인종들이 모여 있는 사회에요.

Many mixed race people. 혼혈도 많죠.

Yes. Each American already looks so different, therefore many ways to be seen as beautiful, many styles of beauty. Many unique combinations.
맞아요. 그렇기 때문에 미국에는 다양한 ‘미 美’ 가 있어요.

Fusion beauty? Fusion beauty 라고 할 수 있겠네요?

Right good way to put it! There is Not 1 standard way of being beautiful, like they have in Korea.

So do some American’s like the Asian look?
근데 아시안 외모를 좋아하는 미국인들이 있나요?

NATURAL Asian features on women could be seen as exotic and rare to American guys, which is really beautiful to some Americans.
인위적이지 않고 자연스러운 외모는 미국인들한테 이국적이고 유니크 할 수 있어요.

Natural, you mean Korean natural beauty, no surgery?
수술 없이 자연스러운 모습 말이죠?
Right. Often American men are attracted to what is natural and what is different. What is different is rare, and what is rare is special to Americans.
