It is funny you ask that, I was just reading an article the other day about this app that is really popular in China that changes the photo and makes your skin look whiter.
미의 기준 얘기를 하니까 제가 얼마 전 읽은 기사가 생각나네요. 중국에는 사진 속의 피부색을 더 하얗게 만들어주는 유명한 어플이 있다고 하더군요.

정말요? 미국인들은 하얀 피부를 좋아하나요?

Many Americans actually like tan skin. Tan is associated with being able too go on vacation somewhere tropical. 많은 미국인들이 태닝된 피부를 좋아해요. 우리는 태닝된 피부를 보고 휴가를 즐길 수 있는 여유가 있다고 생각해요.

Whereas in many places in Asia, tan means that you work outdoors, which is associated with the lower class.
반면에 많은 아시아 지역에서는 태닝된 피부를 바깥 일을 한다거나 약간 수준낮게 보는 경우가 있더라고요.

Really. So Americans don’t mind if you have darker skin?
그래요? 그러면 미국인들은 피부색이 어둡더라도 신경쓰지 않네요?

Many prefer it.
오히려 많은 사람들이 더 선호해요.

Are beauty standards universal?
미의 기준은 세계적으로 동일한가요?

Some beauty standards are universal but some are culturally specific.
세계적으로 보편화되어 있는 미의 기준도 있지만, 문화마다 다르기도 하죠.

I remember watching a documentary about this country in Africa where the women go to feeding camps to gain weight to become more attractive for marriage. I think the place is called Mauritania.
아프리카의 어느 지역에서는 여성들이 일부러 살을 찌우는 ‘Feeding Camp’에 가는데 결혼할 때 더 매력적으로 보이기 위해서죠. 아마 모리타니아 (Mauritania) 라는 지역일 거에요.

Yes. The country is poor and many people are starving so I suppose the logic is: fat = rich = beautiful
네. 제 생각에는 저개발 국가라서 많은 사람들이 굶기 때문에 뚱뚱한게 곧 풍족함이고 풍족함이 곧 아름다움을 의미하는 것 같아요.

What about America?
신기하네요. 미국에서는 어떤가요?

Well America is a rich country and many people are overweight, so being skinny in America, IN MY OPINION, in makes you more attractive.
미국은 개발국가고 많은 사람들이 과체중이기 때문에 날씬한게 더 매력적이라고 생각하는 것 같아요.

I remember when I posted a picture on facebook with 2 Korean women at the beach. My friend who was a former model in America, make a comment about the photo, she wrote “so skinny, so beautiful” 예전에 미국에서 전직모델이었던 친구가 제가 한국 여자친구들과 해변에서 찍은 사진을 보고 ‘너무 날씬하고 이쁘다’ 하더군요.

I don’t think Koreans would think these women were as beautiful as my friend thought. Skinny is rare in America. Beauty is sometimes culturally specific.
근데 제 생각에 한국인들 눈에는 그 한국 여자친구들이 미국인이 칭찬했던 만큼 이뻐보이지 않을 거 같아요. 미국에서는 날씬한게 드물기 때문에 한국인이 보는 관점과는 다른거죠. 이렇게 미의 기준은 문화마다 달라요.

So being skinny in America makes you beautiful?
그러면 미국에서는 날씬한게 더 매력적인 거 군요?

More so than in Korea.
